Merkel's Well-Meant Folly

Two World Wars Are Quite Enough

One of the more insidious doctrines of humanitarianism and secularism is the belief that the State is the Great Redeemer.  This necessitates the duties, responsibilities, functions, and roles belonging to the Church being assumed and taken over by the State.

In Europe this particular defalcation has been long in the cooking.  But as secularism has advanced, this dangerous doctrine of the Redemptive State has become pretty much full-flowered.  Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, has become the avatar of a theology which has the State as Saviour and the Great Redeemer.

In her New Year's address she assured the people that the German government would triumph as the Great Redeemer of mankind.  It would triumph over hatred and Islamism with compassion, not punishment.  In Merkel's world-view and twisted theology, the State has become the Church and assumed its functions.  Historically and biblically, the State is God's servant with a sworn duty to punish evildoers.  The Church is God's servant to extend compassion to the poor, the needy, the suffering.  But in Merkel-world, the State has assumed all of these responsibilities to itself.
In the federal chancellor’s New Year address to Germany, Merkel asserted that the terror attacks committed by Islamist migrants in Würzburg, Ansbach, and recently at a Christmas market in Berlin were not attacks on Western civilisation but an attack on ‘refugees’ and Germany’s willkommenskultur (‘welcome culture’).

She stated terrorists “mock [the willingness of Germany to help] with their deeds [acts of terrorism], like they mock those who really need and deserve our protection.”  Adding that it is “particularly bitter and repulsive” when terrorist attacks are committed by migrants, Merkel pushed back against criticism of her unwavering commitment to mass migration, saying that Germany will fight the “hatred” of terrorism with “humanity” and “unity.” [Breitbart London]
In this crass overreach, Merkel risks bringing Germany to its knees.  Ironically, Merkel and her supporters appear to believe underneath it all that the real enemy Germany faces is a re-emergence of Nazism.  If the state does not love, it will descend into hate, even totalitarian hate.  Therefore, Germany must extend redemptive compassion to any and all who seek protection over Germany's imaginary borders.  If not, German risks falling back into extremist race-driven ideologies of hate, oppression, and death.

The irony lies here: the intent of Merkel's "win the war by compassion" doctrine is such a vast overreach of the powers and function of the State, that it will inevitably produce the very curse she wishes to avoid.

If Merkel were to have the German federal government perform its true God-given duties and responsibilities, she would be focused like a laser upon protecting Germany's citizens from crime. She would be intent upon defending the country--which includes the duty to maintain strict border controls.  But because she has broadened the duties and role of the State to include (primarily) redemption of humanity, there can be only one certain outcome of such an overreach:  the German Reich will fail.

It is more than likely that amidst such failure and defalcation from duty, a desire for a new fuehrer who would put things right, will arise.  It was the failure of the Weimar Republic which produced conditions ideal for the rise of Hitler and the Nazis.  It is more than likely that Merkel's confused ambitions for Germany to be the Saviour of the world through extending compassion to all will lead to the failure of the German state.  The lust for a strong man to "clean up the mess" will consequently grow.

Just how far Merkel is now removed from these risks and realities can be seen in the following:
Asserting that “[the] state is doing everything to ensure its citizens’ security in freedom,” the chancellor said that in the midst of mourning for the dead and injured in these “difficult days,” Germans should seek “consolation” in each other.
Expecting Germans to console each other, as murderous migrants kill citizens, whilst the government maintains open border to each and all who want to enter the country indicates that Merkel is living in a make-believe world.  She has lost touch with reality.
Over the past two years, Germany has experienced its worst series of terror atrocities since the 1980s, with Islamist suicide bombings, shootings, axe attacks, and a truck rampage. The country has also experienced waves of mass sex attacks, social unrest, crime, and pressure on public services brought upon by the mass importation of peoples from the Islamic world.
By assuming the mantle of the Saviour of Mankind, Merkel risks turning Germany into another Weimar Republic.  All because she has harboured grand designs of the German Reich replacing the Church and assuming its responsibilities.  Will Merkel prove to be the forerunner of the Fourth Reich?  We hope not.  Two World Wars are quite enough.
