UK Gone Burger?

One Law for Black Lives Matter, Another for the Rest

James Delingpole
Breitbart London

Here is a message which should send a shudder down the spine of anyone who believes in the concept of equality before the law: a British police department openly admitting that it intends to give special, favourable treatment to Black Lives Matter.

Northumbria Police
✔
@northumbriapol
We'll be in attendance to facilitate a planned Black Lives Matter vigil at Keel Square in #Sunderland tonight.
A Section 14 order is in place forbidding any other public assembly, including counter-protests, to ensure the public's safety. Anyone with concerns should ring 101.
Note the use of that weasel word “vigil”. Presumably this comes from the same dictionary of politically correct excuse-making that led the BBC describe a violent Black Lives Matter violent demo in London — in which 27 police officers were injured — as ‘largely peaceful.’

It’s a lie and an insulting lie at that. Vigils are what angels keep. Vigils are what servicemen keep over the bodies of their fallen comrades. Vigils are honourable, solemn, ancient — and have nothing whatsoever to do with a bunch of mostly white, middle-class “uni” graduates and Marxist agitators causing mayhem on the public streets under the pretence that they fighting against “structural racism”.

Note also that Northumbria Police are effectively declaring a two-tier policing system. Protest gatherings — even ones pretending to be “vigils” — are illegal under the draconian legislation which was rushed through by the British parliament in response to coronavirus. Yet here is Northumbria Police explicitly — and unilaterally — announcing to the world that they consider Black Lives Matter are exempt.

Why?

‘Total Surrender to Anarchy’

English Police Force Advises Officers to ‘Take The Knee’ in Front of BLM Protests

Kurt Zindulka
Breitbart London

An English police force has suggested that officers ‘take the knee’ during Black Lives Matter protests in order to avoid unwanted attention from the leftist activists, a move which Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage described as “insanity mixed with cowardice”.

Hertfordshire Constabulary advised officers symbolically join the BLM movement by kneeling during a recent briefing for Operation Velour, claiming that the gesture of submission has a “very positive” effect on protests.  “Officers are to be mindful that this is optional and those who do not do so may become the focus of the protestors’ attention,” the advice said according to the Mail on Sunday.

“This has a very positive and engaging effect and when taken by officers, has a positive reaction on the protest groups,” Hertfordshire Constabulary added.  A senior detective from the constabulary slammed the move, saying: “It’s absurd. Will officers be expected to make similarly appeasing gestures at political events – far-Right protests, for instance?”

Nigel Farage also blasted the police force, remarking: “That Hertfordshire police want their officers to take the knee before protestors is a total surrender to anarchy, Marxism and an organisation that wants them abolished. Insanity mixed with cowardice.”

The Day the Police State Came

They Have Made Us All Prisoners

The new authoritarian State’s dream has come true thanks to the repulsive word 'lockdown'

Peter Hitchens
Mail on Sunday

We will never get out of this now. It will go on for ever. We will not be free people again.   Even when we seem to be free we will be like prisoners on parole, who can be snatched back to their cells at a moment’s notice.

I think I now understand why this period has come to be known by the repulsive word ‘lockdown’, an American term which describes the punishment of rioting convicts in a penitentiary, by confining them in their cells for long periods.   I hate this word, because it does not seem to me to be fitting to describe free people in a free country.

But we are no longer such people, or such a country. We have become muzzled, mouthless, voiceless, humiliated, regimented prisoners, shuffling about at the command of others, stopping when told to stop, moving when told to move, shouted at by jacks-in-office against whom we have no appeal.  We are learning, during this induction period, to do what we are told and to become obedient, servile citizens of a new authoritarian State. We are unlearning the old rules of freedom.

More Idiocy From UK Police

Police Hunt Driver For Sexual Assault

Kissed Elderly Woman on Cheek

Jack Montgomery
Breitbart London

Derbyshire Police are trying to hunt down a lorry driver who gave a woman in her seventies a thank-you kiss on the cheek after she helped guide his vehicle out from under a bridge.

The police force, which drew criticism in recent months for deploying a special drone team to harass lone ramblers and dog-walkers for taking socially-distanced exercise in the middle of nowhere, tweeted that the gesture “would be classed as a sexual assault as the woman did not [ask] the man to kiss her on the cheek.”

“We want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may be able to help our enquiries into the incident. Of particular interest are any drivers who were in the area at the time and may have captured the lorry on dashcam,” they wrote in an online appeal for information — now deleted, as a result of the public derision which they received.

“We issued an appeal for information this morning after a woman was kissed on the cheek in an unwanted gesture from a man she did not know,” the force said in a statement quoted by the Telegraph.  “The social media post drew a significant number of comments that were counterproductive to the nature of the appeal and as a result, the decision was made to remove it,” they confirmed.

They were clear that they have not given up the hunt for the driver, however, adding: “It is important to note that people with information related to the incident can still get in touch with us if they can help.”

Derbyshire Police are alleged to have been less zealous in their pursuit of other criminals, such as “Asian” grooming gang rapists — with a 2011 report by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) suggesting that their crimes were not properly investigated.

Britain At Its Worst

At the Anti-Lockdown Rally I Saw the Best – and Worst – of Britain

James Delingpole
Breitbart London

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.

That’s how it felt at the anti-lockdown rally in Hyde Park, London, yesterday, where I was threatened with a fine and arrest for the crime of doing my job. It’s also where I got to see Britain at its best – and worst.

There weren’t many protestors but those who were made me proud to be British. We were a very mixed crowd, very representative of the melting pot that London has become – and definitely considerably less white and middle class than the crowd you’d find at an Extinction Rebellion rally.

I met a black working-class couple who were both bus drivers; several smartly dressed, well-spoken elderly people; an American former US diplomat and former Democrat voter; a very distressed French-sounding girl distraught that she’d been harassed by police simply for remaining in the same area for more than 45 minutes; a woman who had grown up in 70s Czechoslavakia and recognised the symptoms of Communism all too easily. There were anti-vaxxers, yes, and people who felt that all the world’s current ills could be traced back to Bill Gates, yes. But mostly this was a rally about freedom, where everyone present could not quite believe just how easily so many British people had surrendered willingly to the most flagrant assault on liberty in centuries.

This ought not to be a weird, eccentric thing to want to protest.

Police In Breach of the Law

UK to Review All Coronavirus Criminal Cases After Reports of Wrongful Convictions

Kurt Zindulka
Breitbart News

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) of the United Kingdom will begin reviewing every charge, conviction, and sentence that has been brought under emergency laws following reports that overzealous police have wrongfully charged people during the pandemic.

Police forces throughout the country have been using the powers granted to the (sic) under the act — specifically with the clause dealing with potentially infected people — to charge people that they felt were outdoors without a good excuse.

“These are exceptional powers. We need to make sure they are being applied consistently and lawfully,” a CPS spokesman told The Times.  We are working with all police forces and prosecutors to make sure the new Coronavirus Act and Regulations are being correctly applied. Unlawful charges are being withdrawn by prosecutors in court, and we are asking for any wrongful convictions to be overturned,” he added.

The decision by the CPS to review came shortly after civil liberties watchdog Big Brother Watch published a review of what it termed the “staggering incompetence” that has occurred during the national lockdown.

The group highlighted the case of Marie Dinou, who was arrested and fined £660 for refusing to tell British Transport Police her reason for travelling. Ms Dinou was charged under Schedule 21 of the act which criminalises “failing without reasonable excuse to comply with any direction, reasonable instruction, requirement or restriction”. This section of the law only grants the police to take such actions against “potentially infectious persons”.

The conviction against Dinou was later overturned, with police admitting: “We fully accept that this shouldn’t have happened and we apologise.”

Corrupt Police Officer Caught Out

UK Cop Threatens to ‘Make Something Up’ to Arrest Man

Kurt Zindulka
Breitbart London

A police officer in Lancashire, England was recorded threatening a British citizen with arrest on made-up charges during a coronavirus confrontation that has gone viral on social media.

Lancashire Police said that they are investigating an incident in which an officer told a member of the public that he would “make something up” in order to arrest the man. It is unclear what the reason was for the altercation, in which the member of the public accuses the officer of “harassing” him.

“If you want to fucking step to me and push your chest out and something like that then fine, I’ll lock you up. We’ll do that shall we?,” the officer told the man, Lancashire Live reports.  The unnamed man protested his innocence, claiming that he had done “nothing wrong” — to which the officer replied: “I’ll make something up. Public order. Squaring up to a police officer. Shall I do that?”

“Who are they going to believe me or you? Who are they going to believe me or you?” the officer warned.

Broken Freedoms and a Crippled Economy

The Folly of the "Great Panic"

Peter Hitchens
Mail on Sunday

As I watched the Prime Minister order mass house arrest on Monday night, I felt revulsion, anger and grief – as anyone brought up when this was a free and well-governed country would. I also felt terribly alone.

You could not have known, from anything broadcast that night or printed the following day, that anyone was unhappy with these events. But they were.  So, above all things this week, I would like to thank all the kind, perplexed people who have got in touch with me by so many means, to say they share my doubts about the Government’s handling of Covid-19.

There are, in fact, many of us. If you feel this way, you are nothing like as solitary as you think.

Next, I would like to thank all those who disagree with me, who choose to abuse me, often with lies, personal smears and swearwords. Your childish, intolerant reaction has strengthened me in my conviction that mine is the better case. If your policy is so good, why can you not defend it like civilised adults? Do you really think that I regret needless deaths any less than you? Can you not accept that I also have good motives?

I now suspect this dark season might get still worse before we see the clear, calm light of reason again. The greater the mistake we have made, the less willing we are to admit it or correct it. This is why I greatly fear worse developments in the coming few days.

When I predicted roadblocks in my column two weeks ago, which I did, I did so out of an instinct that we were entering on the craziest period of our lives since the death of Princess Diana.

East German Style Oppression Comes to the UK

Coronavirus Has Exposed Britain’s Snitches and Police Tyrants

The British love liberty, up to a point, but nowadays they love informing on their neighbours even more.

Charlie Peters
National Review Online

Before our lives switched to lockdown and immobility, I was enjoying a few pints with a friend in a pub on Fulham’s bustling North End Road. We were discussing one of our favorite topics — Germany — and how we’ve both noticed that the country is infected with a rancid culture of snitching.

By contrast, Britain, I said, can take great pride from our national attitude against tattletales, which starts in the school playground before fermenting into full-blown opposition to informing on neighbors when the police come knocking.

He told me I was wrong, and that we’re just as ripe for the Germanic grassing (informing) that we both lamented.  He has been proven right. The coronavirus epidemic has revealed that vast swaths of our society need little incentive to transform into curtain-twitching, proto-Stasi informants.

A little over two weeks ago, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced tougher restrictions on our liberty to prevent the spread of the virus. “Stay home and save lives” was his rallying cry. Unfortunately, many took this to mean “Stay home and make sure your neighbor does the same.”

Northamptonshire — which I now rank as one of England’s bottom three counties — has reported a thriving snitching community, with its chief constable, Nick Adderly, recently revealing that the force has faced a surge in calls from people reporting their neighbors for “going out for a second run.”

Not wanting to miss out on an opportunity to embarrass themselves in public, many of our overzealous police forces have launched online contact forms so people can grass on their neighbors.

Boris Johnson Jumpiness Undermines The Nation

There’s Powerful Evidence This Great Panic is Foolish

Our Freedom is Still Broken and Our Economy Crippled

Common Sense Conclusoins

Lord Sumption Speaks

Hysteria-Driven Government Coronavirus Policy.

[A conversation between Peter Hitchens and Lord Sumption]

This is a  recording of the astonishing interview of Lord Sumption, a former member of the Supreme Court and last year's Reith Lecturer,  on BBC Radio 4's World at One today , Monday 30th March 2020. It is  by far the most high-powered criticism , made in public by a senior figure of considerable reputation and merit, of government policy on the corona virus. I shall be providing a transcript as soon as I can, but in the meanwhile I ask you to disseminate it as widely as possible, as I fear that other media may not do so in these strange times.  [Peter Hitchens
Here is a transcript of the whole interview.

The real problem is that when human societies lose their freedom, it's not usually because tyrants have taken it away.   It's usually because people willingly surrender their freedom in return for protection  against some external threat.     And the threat is usually a real threat but usually exaggerated.

That's what I fear we are seeing now.   The pressure on politicians has come from the public.    They want action.    They don't pause to ask whether the action will work.    They don't ask themselves whether the cost will be worth paying.   They want action anyway.   And anyone who has studied history will recognise here the classic symptoms of collective hysteria.

Hysteria is infectious.     We are working ourselves up into a lather in which we exaggerate the threat and stop asking ourselves whether the cure may be worse than the disease.

Warning From Top Judge

Coronavirus Rules are 'Hysterical Slide Into a Police State'

The former Supreme Court justice Lord Sumption hit out at the heavy-handed measures taken by Derbyshire Police

Nicola Bartlett
Daily Mirror

A former Supreme Court justice has warned that the public are displaying "collective hysteria" over coronavirus.  Lord Sumption, who retired as a justice at the UK's highest court in 2018, hit out at the way that some police forces are interpreting the new rules.

He said: "The pressure on politicians has come from the public; they want action. They don't pause to ask whether the action will work, they don't ask themselves whether the cost will be worth paying - they want action anyway.

Lord Sumption told Radio 4's The World At One:"Anyone who has studied history will recognise here the classic symptoms of collective hysteria, which is infectious.  We are working ourselves up into a lather in which we exaggerate the threat and stop asking ourselves whether the cure may be worse than the disease."

He added: "Yes, this is serious, and, yes, it's understandable that people cry out to the Government, but the real question is, is this serious enough to warrant putting most of our population into house imprisonment, wrecking our economy for an indefinite period, destroying businesses that honest and hard-working people have taken years to build up, saddling future generations with debt?

"Depressions, stress, heart attacks, suicides and unbelievable stress inflicted on millions of people who are not especially vulnerable and will suffer only mild symptoms or none at all like the Health Secretary and the Prime Minister."

The police force caused controversy when they used drones to deter people from breaking the lockdown rules by travelling to remote areas for their daily exercise.

UK Elites Compromised on Cannabis

Legalise Cannabis?

Let's Ask the Five Victims of a Crazed London Knifeman First

Peter Hitchens
The Mail on Sunday

If Jason Kakaire had screamed ‘Allahu akbar!’ as he went about his bloody work, you would have heard of him, and he would have been debated in the House of Commons.  But because Kakaire’s five cruel and devastating knife attacks in London could not possibly be given any political or religious motive, there is barely a ripple of interest in his case. This is a mistake.

There are two reasons for the error. The first is that our bloated but unsuccessful ‘security’ apparatus, assisted by posing politicians, likes to use supposed terrorism to boost its power and budgets.

Kakaire is of course a long-term user of marijuana. He should not have been. If the police enforced the law of the land, as happens in Japan in South Korea, he would not have been. But they do not. So he is

It hopes nobody will notice that in fact it is almost entirely useless at preventing such attacks.  Why?

The UK Invisible Police Force

It's That Simple

When Police Foot Patrols Stop, Stabbings Rise

Peter Hitchens
Mail On Sunday

How quickly we get used to evil. Stabbings in the streets, once incredibly rare in this country, are now common in big cities and become more so every year. It is unwise to get involved if you see anyone behaving strangely in a public place, or on a train or a bus.

There are so many cases which show that even a polite attempt to call for calm can end with a knife in the guts that my intervening days are definitely over.

I have my own ideas about why this is, which have much to do with marijuana. But there is another element to it, which a new survey has uncovered. Plenty of people see these killings and know who did them. But in a lot of cases they will not give evidence in court.  A BBC survey has just found that youth workers, police and prosecutors believe witnesses are afraid for their own safety.

Julius Capon, head of the Homicide Unit of the Crown Prosecution Service in London, says: 'In most of the gang violence that we prosecute, there are witnesses who have plainly seen something which would be relevant to the prosecution but are not prepared to give evidence.'

Totalitarianism On the March In the UK

The Madness of it All

The following article has appeared in The Spectator magazine.  It alerts Oxford citizens to a horrible, detestable crime wave which is sweeping across the town and surrounding districts.  James Kirkup, writing for The Spectator, briefs all and sundry on this new horror.

A ‘Transphobic’ Crime Wave Has Hit Oxford

James Kirkup
The Spectator

Oxford is suffering a crime wave. Police are investigating numerous serious offences over more than six months. Thames Valley Police has issued this sweeping statement about unacceptable acts in the city:

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses following a number of public offences in Oxford.

Officers are investigating a large number of offensive stickers that have been placed across Oxford city centre containing transphobic comments. It is believed they started appearing in March 2019 within the High Street, Catte Street and Parks Road area.  Investigating officer PC Rebecca Nightingale based at St Aldates police station said: “Behaviour like this is not acceptable and we take incidents of this nature very seriously.

“I am appealing for anyone who may of witnesses these stickers being placed around the city or anyone who has information that may assist our investigation to call the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 43190163238 or report online.

“Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers 100% anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Sounds serious, eh?

Corrupted by Ineptitude--More Views on UK Policing Stupidity

"The Met Police Have Failed Us"

Shut Them Down and Start Again

By Peter Hitchens
Mail On Sunday

Britain’s biggest police force is now institutionally unjust, and so is not fit for the task we have entrusted to it. The report by Sir Richard Henriques into its ‘VIP paedophiles’ investigation is one of the most devastating ever published about any official body.

If any other organisation was involved, we would disband it and start again, as I increasingly believe we should do with the police. This horrible mess is closely linked to their failure to control or deal with the crimes they increasingly regard as petty, of theft and disorder. The same sort of mind that ignores these things is all-too-readily convinced by mad claims that the country is beset with high-level paedophile plots.

The Met’s Commissioner, Dame Cressida Dick, did not respond to the report in person, but instead sent her deputy, Sir Stephen House, out on to the doorstep. He gave a sort of railway apology, pungent with insincerity. He was ‘deeply sorry’ for mistakes that ‘were made’ – not mistakes that he had made or the force had made. They had ‘been made’ passively by somebody or other, not named.

The force, he explained, did not agree with everything Sir Richard Henriques had said. I’ll bet it doesn’t. People who have been caught bang to rights tend not to agree. And why should they? The officers involved have escaped any serious action against them despite withering criticism.

Disgraceful Chapter in the History of UK Policing

Police Were Blind, Deaf, Dumb And Prejudiced!

Here is a story which (to our knowledge) got zero coverage in New Zealand.  Why should it?  We Downunder are far too sophisticated and smart to get taken in the way the Met in London was duped.

The HuffPost ran the numbers on what went down:

UK Pedophile Sentenced To 18 Years

Made Up VIP Pedophile Ring Abuse Story

Ex–child advocate Carl Beech said he’d been abused by a murderous pedophile ring, but it turned out he was the pedophile.

By Chris York

A former UK child advocate who lied about being abused by a murderous VIP Westminster pedophile ring has been sentenced to 18 years in jail.  Carl Beech, 51, was convicted of perverting the course of justice and fraud on Monday, over the lies which ruined the reputations of a number of political figures.

He repeatedly told officers he had been abused in the 1970s and 1980s by a string of high-profile figures from the worlds of politics, the military and security services.  His claims about being sexually abused as a boy and witnessing three child murders at the hands of the group led the Metropolitan Police to raid the homes of 91-year-old Normandy veteran Field Marshall Lord Bramall, the late Lord Brittan and former Tory MP Harvey Proctor.

The force has come under widespread criticism for the investigation, which closed in 2016 without making a single arrest and was described by Proctor as a “truly disgraceful chapter in the history of British policing”.

Among Beech’s allegations were claims that his stepfather, an Army major, raped him and passed him on to generals to be tortured and sadistically abused at military bases by other establishment figures.  Lord Bramall said the impact of Beech’s “monstrous allegations” were worse than any of the injuries he had received in the Army.  He said: “I thought I could be hurt no more. I was never as badly wounded in all my time in the military as I was by the allegations made by ‘Nick’.”

When Police Become Social Workers

A Deadly Error... Committed by Cops

Peter Hitchens
The Daily Mail

It’s the way things cease to be shocking that is so fascinating. If, even 30 years ago, a police force had proposed to let off drug dealers and give them free driving lessons and gym memberships, the Chief Constable involved would have had to resign in about two hours.

Now, when Avon and Somerset Police announce this mad scheme, there’s barely a tremor. To me, the interesting thing here is that those targeted for this crime-rewarding programme are drug dealers. For years, police have excused their cowardly, lawless and disastrous failure to pursue criminal drug users by saying this would free them to catch the evil dealers.

I knew they never really meant it.

Huge Damage Done By Ideologically Driven PM

Police Celebrate End of Theresa May

‘Her Legacy One of Misery’, ‘Country Less Safe’, ‘Officers Will Shed No Tears’

Jack Montgomery
Breitbart London

Police officers across the country are celebrating Theresa May’s resignation, having been thoroughly alienated by the Prime Minister in her previous role as Home Secretary under David Cameron.
Theresa May presided over massive cuts to police budgets and manpower during her tenure, and made “taking on” the Police Federation which represents rank and file officers up to Chief Inspector one of her signature stances — although she seemingly enjoyed a more collegial relationship with politically correct senior officers, such as Metropolitan Police chief Cressida Dick.

As Home Secretary, Mrs May attended Police Federation conferences and publicly berated delegates for “crying wolf” and “scaremongering” when they claimed the cuts — abetted by the left-wing Liberal Democrats, who were in a coalition government with the Tories until 2015 — would destroy neighbourhood policing and lead to the adoption of a “paramilitary style” of policing.

Her first duty as Home Sec and PM was to protect the public. 21,339 fewer police officers in the face of huge increases in violent crime and numerous terror plots. Prisons wrecked, forensic science privatisation disaster, ditto probation. Utter disgrace.

These words came back to haunt her following the Manchester Arena suicide bombing in 2017, when it was revealed that a Greater Manchester Police Officer — who had been decorated as community policeman of the year by May herself — personally warned her that the course she was pursuing could enable a terror attack.

“I have worked in inner city Manchester for 15 years,” Inspector Damian O’Reilly told the then-Home Secretary in 2015.  I felt passionate about what I was doing but in 2010 I had to leave. I couldn’t take it any more because the changes that have been imposed have caused community policing to collapse.

“Intelligence has dried up. There aren’t local officers, they don’t know what’s happening. They’re all reactive, there’s no proactive policing locally. That is the reality ma’am.”

“Neighbourhood policing is critical to dealing with terrorism. We run the risk here of letting communities down, putting officers at risk and ultimately risking national security and I would ask you to seriously consider the budget and the level of cuts over the next five years,” he urged.

The Manchester attack was indeed followed by “paramilitary style” policing, with officer numbers bolstered by having armed, uniform soldiers patrol the streets alongside them.

As Chair I would like to say my goodbyes to @10DowningStreet. You were a poor Home Secretary and a worse Prime Minister. Your efforts to destroy the police have been, thankfully, as unsuccessful as everything else you meddled with.

The Greater Manchester Police branch of the Police Federation was particularly scathing when news of Mrs May’s long-awaited resignation finally broke.

Chairman Stu Berry said that there are now 21,339 fewer police officers and 15,894 fewer members of police staff than in 2010 — despite the general population exploding and violent crime climbing dramatically — and suggested that “officers will shed no tears at her departure” in a statement published on social media.

“I feel that I cannot varnish my words following Theresa May’s decision to leave office. During her time as Home Secretary she decimated the Police Service to near breaking point and significantly reduced the service we provide to the public,” Berry said.

“Her legacy is one of misery for thousands of people. This country a less safer place [sic] due to her ideology as serious crime statistics soar in every major town and city in this country. Our members and the Public we serve will continue to suffer the consequences of her dogma for decades to come,” he insisted.  The emotion that she exhibited today were tears for her own self-made demise. It is a shame that she did not have similar empathy for countless victims of crime that could have been avoided.”

Unprofessional, Illegal Police Actions

Beggaring Belief

Given how London police actually police free speech laws, we are in a position to clarify what free speech rights mean to the Met.  The case involves a street preacher named Olu.

Now, before rushing to conclude that the incident was the work of a rogue police officer (or two) we would remind readers that it would be highly unlikely that the Met officers would have acted as they did without calling their duty sergeant on the radio to ask for advice and direction.  Doubtless they would have endeavoured to portray the events as one extremist individual speaking offensively so as to wind people up to the extent that it constituted a breach of the peace.

So there we have it: firstly, free speech to the London Met Police runs like this: if anyone is offended by the speech of another person, free speech rights have been breached and the speaker is to be arrested.  This, dear reader, is as close as you will get to a real life episode of Orwell's 1984.

Or, an equally iniquitous explanation of the Met police's actions runs like this:
