The Greater Good Overcomes the Orange Horror
Auckland Council has decided to ban orange carrots. Standing up for the little men amongst us, the Council has courageously decided that carrots are not to be permitted to be grown nor sold anywhere within the city's boundaries. They are now officially verboten.
The reason is a noble one. Carrots are a genetically modified vegetable. The risks to the human population from eating genetically modified carrots are unknown and, consequently, unquantifiable. Therefore, with our best interests at heart, the Auckland Council has decided to play it safe and protect us all from possible harm down the track.
To be sure, orange carrots have been consumed throughout the world for nigh on 450 years. Prior to that time they were found in red, or yellow, or purple shades of colour. But the nationalistic, profit-seeking Dutch developed an orange cultivar in honour of the ruling House of Orange. What evils this specific genetic modification have wrought, are wreaking, and will wreak upon the human race are unknown, untold, and unquantifiable--so Auckland Council has banned the carrot.
And not just carrots.

Greenist Luddites and GMO
Let Them Eat Frass
G. K. Chesterton once pointed out that when men stop believing in God, they do not believe in nothing. Rather they believe in anything. The greenists of our day are a moot example of just this syndrome. Chesterton would have said, "See, I told you so."
One of the more stentorian, militant greenist campaigns has been against genetically modified food. It is little more than alarmist, phobic ignorance. But that's what's likely to happen when you stop believing in God, the creator and sustainer of all things.
The following is a transcript on an interview with Pamela Ronald, entitled, "The Case for Engineering Our Food". For all those who suspect, even believe, that the greenists are on the side of the good when it comes to opposing genetic engineering and modification, Ronald's address is a must read.

The Horrors of Genetically Modified Food
Genetically modified organisms are seen by many as the avatar of the End. Terrible evils will be unleashed upon the human race because genes are spliced and foods are made more productive, more nutritious, more technologically supercharged for human consumption. In New Zealand, the Greens have long campaigned that it must be outlawed with a capital "O". As it stands, there is a fair old sequence of hurdles to jump before genetic modification is deemed kosher.
The historical reality is somewhat different. Most food that we consume has been genetically modified in one way, shape, or form. Take the carrot.
We believe that carrots should be woody and unpalatable and horrid to eat
It never used to be orange until the jolly Dutch genetically modified it in celebration of the House of Orange--and forever after we in the West have been corrupted and physically sickened by this monstrous genetically modified vegetable, unknowingly imbibing craven Dutch nationalism.

Sanity and Progress At Last
Going Dutch
It's taken thirty years, but it looks as if the GM food revolution is happening. First, some context. Genetic modification of food (both animal and vegetable) has been in existence since the time humans were first created. In New Zealand, our agricultural industries have thrived and become more and more productive due to genetic engineering.
New Zealand gardens have bloomed with ever increasing numbers of rose varieties, all the product of genetic engineering. Genes of plants and animals have been altered due to the selective breeding of species. But as soon as it became technically feasible to alter the genetic structure of foods by splicing genes together in a laboratory Greenist luddites, inflamed with visions of an imminent holocaust, shut down research centres, destroyed experiments, and used fear and manipulation of the public mind to stop deploying genetically modified crops.
"Keep NZ GE free" was the slogan. It sprouted up on bumper stickers everywhere. Eventually sanity has prevailed--at least in more advanced and enlightened countries, such as the Philippines and India. This is one of the more encouraging pieces you will read in the newspapers this year. It appeared in The Guardian.

More Time Please . . .
Irreducibly Complex
How often have we heard the refrain, "It's more complex than we thought." We have heard it in evolutionary biology, sotto voce of course. The narrative of evolutionists is that primitive life forms are simple; if they are simple, it is an evidence of their age and early positioning on the evolutionary tree. Man is the most complex creature: therefore, a late development on the evolutionary tree--at least, that's what the "just-so" story of evolutionism would have us believe.
A problem in the narrative arises when it becomes evident that some of the allegedly oldest and most primitive creatures on the planet are also incredibly complex. Take, for example, the "most primitive" deep sea dwellers. Their large compound eyes are far, far more complexly constructed than initially assumed.
Another evolutionist narrative is that due to evolutionary forces human beings have a lot of "junk" in their systems. This is "stuff" which once was useful, but as evolution took place, became redundant or superseded and so was made inert. The appendix and tonsils are organs which evolutionists in days gone by have interpreted in that way.
So with research into human genetics.

The "Natural" Does Not Exist Any Longer
Several days ago we watched a doco on genetic engineering. It was not the normal fodder of Luddite claptrap. Genetic crop and animal scientists were expressing their frustration at the irrational phobias that hamstring the development and deployment of genetically modified crops and farm animals.
At one point the interviewer asked a scientist whether they were willing to risk destroying the natural habitat (visible in the background) with the release of genetically modified crops, such as vitamin rich rice--calculated to save over two million lives a year in the developing world. The scientist pointed out that there was nothing "natural" at all about the landscape before them. It had all been genetically modified by selective breeding over centuries.
