Hold The Troops in Due Honour
Now, this is rather neat.
Regular readers of this website will know that we have been staunch critics of US global military involvement to "make the world safe for democracy" or, whatever. The idea that the US would arrogate to itself the role of being the world's saviour, protector, redeemer and messiah is not just misplaced, it is offensive and blasphemous. There is only One to Whom the Living God had given that honour, power, and authority, and He does not tolerate idol-pretenders in His presence.
But we are not anti-war. Far from it.
We believe that to be a Christian requires one to support lawful war--which we believe always ought to be an extension of the civil magistrate's duty to punish by the sword those who seek to murder or do evil to those whom God has entrusted to the magistrates.
Therefore, God has made nation protection, defence, a fundamental responsibility of the civil magistrate--or the government. The more faithful to Christ a nation becomes, the more defensively potent its military is likely to be. Moreover, the US has a non-politicised military--that is, it must serve when, where, and how its civilian, political masters command. Thus, it is not the fault of the US military that it has been deployed around the globe in an overreaching, arrogant, idolatrous, and presumptive manner.
It is great when a nation holds its military in due honour. Actor Gary Sinise has formed the Lt Dan Band--reprising his famous role as Lt Dan (must be pronounced with a Southern accent)--in the movie, Forrest Gump. The band tours and performs to give moral support to US troops and military families. Now they are making a movie about the band. Here is the trailer. Excellent stuff.
