The Herald recently carried a piece on the Maersk Alabama which had warded off an attack by pirates. You may recall that this is the second time the Alabama has been attacked by pirates. The first time it had to be rescued by Navy Seals. This time it was carrying armed guards who showed the pirates the business end of a few assault rifles.
All well and good, and unremarkable. Except for this. Apparently the UN does not like the idea of merchant ships defending themselves against pirates.
The UN's Maritime Safety Committee says members should "strongly discourage the carrying and use of firearms by seafarers for personal protection or for the protection of a ship." The concern is that bringing guns aboard ship will encourage violence. Why is the left so pacifist? Why do they hate the fundamental human right of self-defence? Why does a Safety Committee reject the very thing which would make sailing through dangerous waters far safer?
The UN is long passed its "use by" date. It's time New Zealand came to its senses and withdrew.
