Loser Letters #10

Can Natural Selection Work Faster, Please

In this final letter, A F Christian is checked out from rehab. Her question this time to her new comrades, the Athiest Brights is why natural selection has not worked sufficiently to the point that it has got rid of guilt--that most debilitating universal reality. Atheist Brights need to find an explanation, and find it fast. Read the final letter, here.

What makes you think that Natural Selection would act to get rid of guilt. Or the author of those letters think (the National Review does Screwetape?) something being "inbuilt" means it's not a product of evolution?

Hi, David. I presume the argument is that in a random universe "right" and "wrong" has no reference or meaning. Therefore, for humans to retain such concepts--apparently inescapably so--would indicate that Natural Selection has some "explaining" to do.

And I think Evolutionary Psychologists would argue that right and wrong mean quite a lot in hunter gatherer tribes. Robert Trivers and Stephen Pinker in particular have written about such topics (neither are my favourite academics but taken with sufficient salt they do offer interesting ways of thinking about the human condition)
