The following quotation is taken from Earl Warren (1891-1974). He was an acclaimed lawyer; served as the 30th Governor of California (1943-1953) and later as the 14th Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court (1953-1969).
I believe no one can read the history of our country without realizing that the good Book and the Spirit of the Savior have from the beginning been our guiding geniuses . . . . Whether we look to the first charter of Virginia . . . or to the Charter of New England . . . or to the Charter of Massachusetts Bay . . . or to the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut . . . the same objective is present: A Christian Land governed by Christian principles . . . . I like to believe we are [still] living in the Spirit of the Christian religion. I like also to believe that as long as we do so, no great harm can come to our country. [Augusto Zimmermann, Christian Foundations of the Common Law. Volume 2 The United States (Brisbane: Connor Court Publishing Pty Ltd.) p.38.]One wonders whether Justice Warren would still make the same claims about the United States today. If not, his remarks would nevertheless stand as a testament to the radical changes the US has undertaken in the last fifty years. On the other hand, the truth of what Warren asserts concerning the "original" United States is undeniable.
May God grant a genuine re-formation of the United States around the fundamental truth of "a Christian land governed by Christian principles". Such a reformation in the United States would doubtless have an enormous impact upon Australia, New Zealand, Canada--and even the UK.
