Leadership, Not Personal Ambition

Keen followers of the United States will know that the national debt crisis of that country at the Federal Government level is only part of the problem. Most state governments are also deeply in debt. The reasons are simple: firstly, state sector unions (most often teacher unions) extracting entitlements and benefits from lawmakers that represent nothing more than a pillaging of tax payers. Secondly, progressive state governments spending up on popular entitlements and social programmes and borrowing to do it. Thirdly, tax revenues sharply declining due to recession and middle-class wealth flight. (Sound familiar?)

The State of New Jersey is one of the worst. Several months ago--facing a huge spending and taxation crisis--the normally left-wing dominated state elected a Republican governor, Chris Christie on a platform of cutting the deficit, lowering taxes, and righting the "ship of state". Christie is a rare breed of politician--concerned about the public good, not his own re-election prospects.

Enjoy the video of Christie in action, tearing strips off a leftie reporter, and be reminded what genuine political and civic leadership looks like, in case it should ever show its face again in New Zealand.
