Breaking News . . .

Hone Harawira Suspended from Maori Caucus

The announcement was made at around 4.00pm, today. We are not sufficiently close to read tea-leaves.  However, it does appear that the party caucus and leadership is shutting the door to a return.  They have declared that Harawira has left a legacy of five years of disunity through ill-discipline stretching back over five years.

That seems to shut the door on an apology and kiss & makeup--which has been what Hone has done in the past and it has been the tune to which the caucus has been prepared to waltz.

For the well-being of our nation, we are glad.  Harawira is lionised by the Maori sovereignty crowd who want their own gilded version of apartheid, with all but non-Maori marginalised. The Maori party probably needs to split over the issue--and if it does, it would not be a bad thing.  If Maoridom splits over the issue, it would be good.  Only then could Maori political groupings expect to make some progress and be anywhere near the mainstream of politics.

We will see.
